Course Objectives

 This course is intended to discuss current advances in computer science not otherwise offered and will cover the following topics:

· Societal impacts of computing
· Ethical decision making within Information Technology
· Case studies that revolve around current issues in Information Technology
· The impact of economic slowdown on our society and computing environment
Prerequisites: CS 220, 240 or 480 (for CS 481)

Policies

 It is your responsibility to make up any missed class activities. Please check this web page frequently to follow class assignments.

Exams may be made up for emergencies only.

The majority of the material on exams is derived from class lectures. It is very helpful to read ahead in the textbook as to understand what will be covered in the classroom.

Course Withdrawal:
Course withdrawals, without instructor permission, are permitted through the tenth week.
Instructor permission is required after this date and until the last class.

Academic Integrity:
Students are expected to follow the official College policy on Academic Honesty, as described in the 2001-2002 Pathfinder.

Offenses include, but are not limited to:
- turning in work you claim as your own
- working in groups larger than allowed
- cheating on an exam

Penalties:
1st offense - 0 on the assignment or test
2nd offense - F grade for the course

Requirements and Grading

Your grade will be based on the following distribution:

Out of Class Work - 25%

Paper and Presentation - 60%
A 5-7 page paper on a research topic of your choice that relates to a current Computer Science subject. Must be approved by the instructor.

Participation - 15%

The due date for each out of class work assignment will be given on a project by project basis and will be submitted via email. One letter grade will be deducted for each day that the assignment is late.
